Question #7

Where can my child share
his accomplishments?

The Washington Homeschool Organization Student Exhibition is a 2-day event at Warm Beach Conference Center every spring.  Year 2000 dates are March 27 and 28.  Here's a summary of the 1999 event features.
Workshops:  Four 2-hour periods with 32 topics from which to choose.  Children's choices included acting, rubber stamping, CPR, chess, wilderness survival, calligraphy, canoeing and building a better bottle rocket.
Competitions:  In the auditorium and other rooms on campus, students showed their skill in speech, drama, music and spelling on stage.  Perhaps more important than their skill was their composure under pressure.
Exhibits:  The exhibit hall was packed with history and science displays, needlecraft, art and art crafts, jewelry and photography.  Creative writing entries filled tables in the hall.  Students proudly answered questions about their work.  Parents agreed that besides the obvious benefit of a chance to display their work, a major benefit of exhibiting was the opportunity for developing organizational skills in the process of preparing for a hard deadline.  Because the judges had little time to do their job, the students received only  minimal feedback.  However, the judges were careful to give encouraging compliments, and every exhibit received a ribbon.
The annual exhibition is a significant opportunity for homeschoolers to share their accomplishments.  It is also a great goal to use for encouraging completion of projects.  To be sure you're on the mailing list for next year's registration, contact the WHO office.  Keep in mind that WHO will need volunteers to make next year's exhibition even better than this one.
