Question #12

Avoiding Cabin Fever?

When winter comes, how do we keep from tiring of the walls around us?  Here are some preventive medicines that work for some families.

  • Pack up the books and supplies and do your studying at the library once a week.
  • Arrange to use the conference room at Dad's office for a morning; have lunch with Dad before going home.
  • Decorate the house.  Make snowflakes in January, then valentines. Start decorating for Easter with the start of Lent.
  • Host a party.  Invite other homeschoolers for an afternoon of model building, cookie baking, needle crafts, clay sculpting,  play-acting, painting or experimenting.  The science kit Junior got for Christmas will be much more fun when shared.
  • Get out!  Visit the aquarium, the conservatory, a museum.  Put on boots and take a walk in the rain.  Go to the gym.
  • Put a fire in the fireplace and let the kids study by the hearth for a while.
  • Serve a mid-morning study sipper:  Hot Spiced Cider, Hot Cocoa with crushed peppermint stick, or Wassail.

Rainy Day Outing Recommendations
The following Tacoma area fun spots are recommended by THEN readers.
1) Ceramic Shops Offer Classes, Parties, or Quiet Parent-Child Outings
Pick a piece of pottery, paint it, put it aside for firing, and return for your finished piece on another day.  Prices depend on the item selected for painting.   Everything needed for the project is provided.  Special rates may be available  at certain times, for groups, or for a parent and child.  Be sure to ask about party packages.
These local shops have been recommended:.
Downtown near the theatre district:  ""Earth  Wind & Fire Contemporary Studio"
Gig Harbor:  "Art and Soul--Pottery Painting Studio"
The yellow pages list additional ceramic shops in other areas.

2) Chalet Bowl Offers a Clean Relaxed Atmosphere for Parties
The clean atmosphere of the recently remodeled Chalet Bowl in the Proctor District has won the admiration of Natalie Cullen and her young sons.
2) Ice Skating at Sprinker's (South Tacoma) or Roller Skating at Tiffany's (Puyallup)
4) Children's  Museum is a Treat for the Little Ones
The first Friday of the month is free all day.  The museum is small enough to keep track of your younger ones without much trouble, but full of great stuff, including a toddler play area, a stage with costumes, a music room, an art room (with stuff perfect even for the littlest guys), a garden and store and much more.
5) Over and Above for teens
